Montana Program Information
The Montana Department of Revenue, Cannabis Control Division (CCD) welcomes you to Metrc LLC – Marijuana Enforcement Tracking Reporting & Compliance (Metrc) webpage. This site will serve as a resource for information on Metrc, the seed to sale tracking system for marijuana and marijuana products in Montana.
The Cannabis Control Division website can be found here: https://mtrevenue.gov/cannabis/
Q: How much will it cost for the tracking system?
A: The state will pay for licensee access to Metrc, licensees will pay for their own plant and package tags.
Q: How do I get started in Metrc?
A: Access to Metrc requires an active CCD license. Upon license approval, an email will be sent with login instructions. For additional information, please see the Metrc website and YouTube channel linked above.
Q: What POS systems will be available with Metrc?
A: Metrc has a list of validated 3rd party integrators available at the link above.
Q: Is there an API integration with Metrc?
A: Yes, further info on Metrc’s API is available at the API link above
Q: How does the system work?
A: Metrc is a hosted, real-time system that uses serialized tags with bar-code, human-readable and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags attached to every plant, and labels attached to wholesale packages to track marijuana inventory. Each tag is attached to a plant to facilitate tracking through different stages of growth, as well the drying and curing processes, to the sale of the product.
Q: Do I need to purchase any additional hardware such as computers, bar-code readers or RFID readers.
A: Metrc is a completely web-hosted system. That means that all access to Metrc is done via the internet and only requires an internet connection and a web browser. No additional hardware is required. Also, there is no software to download, install, or maintain.
Q: Will other licensees be able to see my inventory information?
A: No. Licensees will only be able to access their own information through Metrc. They will not be able see any information about any other licensee.
Q: What if I have technical issues?
A: Metrc has a dedicated team of support staff available to resolve any technical support issues. The support desk can be contacted via phone or email. See the ‘Contact’ link above.
Q: Are RFID readers required?
A: Activities in Metrc can be accomplished without Bar-code scanners or RFID readers. Although the use of these tools can increase productivity and efficiencies, it will be up to each licensee to decide to use Bar-code or RFID readers, but their use is not required.
Integration & API
For licensees, please select the link above for a list of validated software solution companies. Please check the link above periodically as the list will be updated as new companies are added.
Validated integrators are companies that have been approved by Montana Department of Revenue Cannabis Control Division (CCD). These companies have received training and instructions, signed the Montana Metrc API user agreement, and demonstrated their ability to perform the required functions specified in the validation section of the table below. These approved Integrators have been provided with access to the Metrc application programming interface (API) and can integrate with each area specified. Even though the integrators provided in this list have been granted access to the API it is the responsibility of the licensee to enter accurate information into the Validated system in order to comply with Montana CCD rules and regulations. Neither Metrc nor Montana CCD tests or vouches for the integrators development and/or quality assurance process, nor the overall feature or functionality of the member’s solution(s). The validation process only validates the integrators ability to perform the specific functions identified. As an example, the validation process only verifies that the integrators system has the ability to successfully “put” a package into the Metrc system, it does not validate whether or not the quantity or unit price of the package is in fact accurate. Industry participants will need to work directly with the member to obtain support for their solution. A licensee may only provide their API key (confidential information) to a Montana CCD approved vendor.
Metrc will add to the list as companies become certified over time. If you have questions about this list or the process of approval or validation, including how your business could become validated, please contact Metrc at
For third party vendors, the steps to obtain access to the Metrc API in Montana are:
