Employee Roles
Different jobs require different tools. That’s why this optional feature was designed to align user permissions with real-world responsibilities across your cannabis operation.
With Employee Roles, administrators, or those with the proper permissions, can now create, assign, and manage employee roles with precise permissions so users access only the features and data based on actual work responsibilities.
Need someone to handle cultivation but not transfers? You now have that option.
Want a technician to record harvest weights but not edit items? You can do that too.
A preferred Employee Role Name — such as Admin, Inventory Control Manager, Budtender, Trimmer — can be used along with the following standard Role Types are available:
- Cultivation
- Manufacturing/Production
- Testing
- Retail/Sales
- Distribution
- Transportation
- Wholesale
- Waste Disposal
- Microbusiness
Important tip: When working with Employee Roles, a blue display box will appear explaining the recommended Business Rules and provide further guidance.
These roles reflect how many licensed businesses already work. Instead of giving full access to everyone, you can shape permissions around what’s relevant. That means fewer mistakes, tighter compliance, and faster onboarding.
Keep your work after a system timeout
Ever had to step away from your desk to complete other work or simply get logged out of the Metrc system? Now, your progress is automatically saved—so when you log back in, you can pick up right where you left off when doing specific tasks.
The Session Timeout/Recovery feature allows work to be saved and restored — in the system areas below — even after a session timeout occurs. When you log back in to Metrc, a blue notification will pop-up noting that the previous session was saved. If multiple sessions are saved, a list will populate for you to choose from.
- Licensed Transfers
- External Transfers – Incoming
- External Transfers – Outgoing
- Manicure – Vegetative
- Manicure – Flowering
- Harvest – Flowering
Gone are the days of re-entering your data. Now, you can stay focused on your work without missing a beat.
Get granular with Sublocations
Precise inventory management depends on clearly defined locations, ensuring every item is tracked, accounted for, and easily accessible across your operation.
For licensed cannabis businesses who want more granular control and organization of physical and virtual spaces, the optional Sublocations feature is an ideal way to:
- Map and monitor every area within a facility
- Organize rooms and zones within a facility
- Make auditing easier and faster
- Optimize plant and package management workflows and gain more visibility
- Ensure compliant traceability in the supply chain
Because sometimes, one Location just isn’t enough. Using Sublocations helps you be specific with your inventory management to ensure every plant or product is tracked accurately across your facility, reducing errors and increasing operational confidence.
Let’s say you have a greenhouse with four rows. You can create Row A, Row B, Row C, and Row D as sublocations and track your plants by section. Manufacturers can do the same for staging or processing zones. Break out grow rooms, shelves, packaging stations, or even virtual holding areas.
Sublocations are available in the following areas of Metrc:
- Create Plantings
- Create Plants
- Split Planting
- Change Growth Phase
- Create Package from Planting
- Create Package from Plant
- Create Package from Harvest
- Harvest Plant
- Manicure Plant
You decide how granular you want to be. And if your operation is small, it’s optional to use, so you can use what works best for you.
Create Items and Strains without extra steps
Packaging often needs to move fast so you can get your products to a dispensary or retailer. But Item or Strain creation — an important step in this workflow — needed an efficiency boost in our system.
Now, you can create Items and Strains right from the new package action window. No more jumping to another page. No more lost momentum.
When creating a New Package, whether from an Immature Plant Batch, Harvest or other package, this functionality is available in both the Plants and Packages areas of Metrc, enabling you to ensure all necessary data is available during the new package creation.
If the product or genetics aren’t there, you can add it on the spot and finish the task in one go. It’s smoother, faster, and prevents backlogs.
Important tips:
- Item categories requiring state approval can be created but will not be available until they are approved by the State.
- You must have permissions that grant the ability to create strains and items to be able to see the new button in the Packages action window.
By removing steps and navigation through different screens, you can now streamline workflows, input compliance data efficiently, and minimize errors related to missing information.
Gain harvest efficiencies with Quick Edit
Harvest days are a big deal, and while they tend to bring out a mix of excitement, pressure, and pride — timing is everything. Crops must be cut at the perfect moment to maximize quality and compliance.
Plus, entering weight after weight and all your required compliance data can feel tedious. With Quick Edit, you can streamline harvest and manicure workflows by rapidly moving through weight fields, locking out unrelated non-weight fields for faster, error-free data entry.
By using Quick Edit, you can:
- Save time — Navigate weight fields quickly with tab-only entry. No clicking through every field.
- Reduce errors — Locked non-weight fields prevent accidental edits during harvest entry.
- Stay flexible — Switch the toggle off anytime to return to full editing mode.
- Remain compliant — Integrated with distributed weight and Unit of Measure (UoM) settings to ensure accurate reporting and validation. Based on market-specific requirements and system configurations.
This update is made for speed. Tab straight through each field without any pop-ups or extra clicks — just enter and move to the next while you log weights accurately. Whether you’re dealing with 10 plants or hundreds, this new feature keeps you moving.
More value in every click
These system updates do the heavy lifting, so you don’t have to. Metrc remains committed to delivering additional features and enhancements that fit users’ workflows, reduce complexity, and give you more control — so compliance is simplified and you can focus on what you love and do best.Note: These new feature enhancements may only be available in certain markets.
